Shipping Port WiFi Deployment – An Easy Choice

Improved Efficiency with Wireless Network Upgrade in Port WiFi Deployment

Puerto Lirquen, located in the bay of Concepcion in the Bío Bío region of Chile is the largest private port in public service in the country and it manages 250,000 TEU (The twenty-foot equivalent unit used to describe the capacity of container ships and container terminals.annually). In order to cope with the increasing need to connect real time data and onsite workers, the management of Puerto Lirquen decided to upgrade its wireless network to 802.11ac standard.

The port appointed a leading local system integrator to design and build the new wireless network with superior performance and high scalability. The new wireless network is designed to connect with the Navis N4 system, a container terminal operating system used in the dock areas to achieve faster turnaround times and improve the efficiency of container handling.

The ease and speedy deployment of the Altai Super WiFi Solution enabled quick deployment of the new wireless network for Puerto Lirquen. Following the successful wireless network upgrade, the overall port efficiency has been improved.

The Challenge

  • Large coverage area
  • High interference at the berths
  • Support of different types of applications and uninterrupted connection

Port WiFi Deployment Solution

Conventional access points are not ideal for terminal ports due to the high interference at the berths and Wi-Fi signal blockage by cranes and containers. Following extensive trials with a number of different wireless broadband solutions, an Altai Super WiFi Solution was selected for Puerto Lirquen’s network upgrade project due to its reliability and easy scalability.

Altai A8 and A3 series products are deployed for large area coverage while A2’s are used as bridges to provide wireless backhaul.

The Altai Wireless Management System is also used to manage and monitor the Wi-Fi network.

The Result

The Altai Super WiFi technology enables lower cost, high speed throughput applications, over extended coverage of the challenging terminal port. The site workers are now always connected via the handheld terminals.

Wi-Fi Gold Coast Beaches?

Four words for what we want – Wi-Fi Gold Coast Beaches

With our headquarters based on the Gold Coast, Powertec staff are quite passionate about putting Wi-Fi on the iconic beaches of the City of Gold Coast (if not everywhere on the Coast) in order to move forward as a Smart City. We see the benefits as far reaching; those of health and safety by telling our visitors about surf conditions; to benefits for business’ by offering two for one icecream vouchers; and for those who log in to a city-wide system to share their happy snaps; and there are many other potential uses.

We’re a city that’s all about tourism and attracting foreign visitors to holiday and study. The one thing they will all have in common is that they want to be connected to their families back home. They want to share their iconic Gold Coast centric experiences with their families…..and showcase our city to the rest of the world.

And we are not the only ones who want the same thing apparently. Gold Coast Bulletin journalist Alice Gorman recently ‘wrote out’ about wi-fi after being slugged $70 for wi-fi access at her hotel accommodation by a legacy system (old and out of date extortionate wi-fi charging system) being run by her holiday apartment on the Coast.   We spoke to Alice after her initial article appeared and she wrote a follow-up article below:

So we are ready and willing to speak to anyone who can make this happen – Wi-Fi Gold Coast Beaches.

Unbroken the Movie Event Wi-Fi

Unbroken The Movie Event Wi-Fi Solution

The degree of difficulty in the shooting and production of the life story of World War II hero Louis Zamperini was high – between the war and water scenes, aerial combat, and dogfights, they had a real challenge on their hands.

But not so the internet access for the production site on the Gold Coast set of the movie.

In October 2013 Powertec was given the opportunity to provide 3 remote data link systems for the “Unbroken” film production directed by Angelina Jolie. As filming was moving between multiple locations through remote areas of the Gold Coast, they required a solution that was both mobile and could be up and running in minutes.

Product/s Used

The Ericsson W35 is a Mobile Broadband Router and the natural choice for providing voice, fax and high speed internet using the mobile phone networks. It offers a highly cost efficient solution utilising the 2G/3G mobile network, especially in locations that lack fixed line infrastructure or as an alternative to traditional landline based services.

This state-of-the-art WCDMA/HSUPA mobile broadband router with integrated design for high quality and performance support the major deployed communication standards.

The Ericsson W35 is ideal for many applications including, marine, corporate voice and internet backup, call cost reduction, wireless local loop, data applications and home office use.

The Altai C1an Wi-Fi Access Point/Bridge is designed as an essential component to extend outdoor Wi-Fi coverage into indoor areas for broadband connectivity.

The Solution

By using multiple Ericsson W35 3G routers attached to high gain antennas for incoming signal and Altai C1n WiFi Access Points for outgoing high speed Wi-Fi, Powertec were able to provide a secure compact mobile internet system with multiple levels of access for the entire on-set production crew.

Commentary

With 26 award nominations and 10 wins, the movie was a critical and box office success.

Our contribution was like any other member of the production crew, we quietly got the job done and the movie was made. Powertec and our Australia-wide partners are very experienced in one-off production sites so variants of this event wi-fi solution would be suitable for beach events, music festivals, and even Tough Mudder-type events.

The Texas – Marine Wifi Solution

Texas is a Superyacht measuring 44.6 metres and custom built in 1984 by Turkish company Turquoise Yachts. This beautiful vessel is capable of a maximum speed of 12 knots and can accommodate up to 12 guests. It runs a full complement of staff to ensure the journey ran smoothly for our cruisers.

Texas was once owned by Solomon Lew, an Australian businessman and one of Australia’s richest men who made his billions primarily from importing goods from China into Australia.  Lew owned not just the Texas but also kept in his garage a spare superyacht the 54-metre Maridome.

Business Needs

Every 5 years most yachts are required to schedule an overhaul to undergo servicing and redo all the certifications – which generally coincides with a refit. The Australian owner recently docked her into a Brisbane ship yard in Hemmant to receive her makeover.

At the same time as her bottom was being cleaned, the captain contacted a local Dealer who worked with Powertec to upgrade all the communications equipment. The focus was on ensuring full data, marine Wi-Fi and mobile coverage was able to be accessed on board, for future journeys.

Product/s Used

  • 1 x Marine Antenna & Base
  • 1 x NTC-140W-02 Netcomm 3G/4G Wifi M2M Router
  • 4 x Altai SuperWifi C1n 2.4GHz CPE/AP

The Solution

The Netcomm Wireless 4G Wi-Fi M2M router utilises the speed and performance of the 4G network to deliver seamless M2M connectivity and supply the data. A complete range of networking and connectivity options are available with this industrial router allowing Altai Super Wi-Fi components to be utilised alongside. Four of the Altai C1n Super WiFi CPE/AP’s were used to extend the Wi-Fi coverage throughout all the cabins and decks with the Marine Antenna capturing the mobile signal to ensure signal was received at all times.

All marine wifi parts supplied were weatherproof so perfect for this type of highly destructive environment.

Commentary

The Captain of the Texas commented that the set-up simplicity, the ease of use and lack of ongoing maintenance were the main reasons they purchased these marine wifi brands.
