The port appointed a leading local system integrator to design and build the new wireless network with superior performance and high scalability. The new wireless network is designed to connect with the Navis N4 system, a container terminal operating system used in the dock areas to achieve faster turnaround times and improve the efficiency of container handling.

The ease and speedy deployment of the Altai Super WiFi Solution enabled quick deployment of the new wireless network for Puerto Lirquen. Following the successful wireless network upgrade, the overall port efficiency has been improved.

Port WiFi Deployment Solution

Conventional access points are not ideal for terminal ports due to the high interference at the berths and Wi-Fi signal blockage by cranes and containers. Following extensive trials with a number of different wireless broadband solutions, an Altai Super WiFi Solution was selected for Puerto Lirquen’s network upgrade project due to its reliability and easy scalability.

Altai A8 and A3 series products are deployed for large area coverage while A2’s are used as bridges to provide wireless backhaul.

Telegram Co. is a niche lifestyle business owned by the Dymocks booksellers chain in Australia. They specialise in high end stationary including pens, inks, specialist letter writing papers, and accessories across a range of over 10,000 products. They are different from other distributors as they promote partners and sell partner brands to gift, lifestyle and homeware stores.

Telegram Co. and 30 of their 45 staff recently moved into a brand new warehouse space based in West Footscray, Melbourne. At the same time the administrative team of 15 (including 5 dogs) moved into a new Office site in Collingwood.

Both new premises was wired ready to set up state of the art point of sale, scanners, stock management, and dispatch software for the company, but they needed an expert to plan their wireless solution to enable smart automation plus connect the two office environments for efficient operations.

Business Needs

With the move to a new 10,000 square meter, 3 storey high warehouse, the business required an expert to review the site for the best Wi-Fi options. The company wanted 3 separate networks with differing data uses within each network. Telegram Co. contacted 3 competing Wi-Fi brands one of which one was Simon Moore, Principal of Fine Tune Communications who works with the Altai SuperWifi brand.

As part of the tender process Simon reviewed the warehouse and admin office floor plans off site to come up with an initial indication of product requirement. He then visited the sites to confirm with the client the coverage they required, check the construct of the buildings, and measure the RF signals in the area.

Warehouses are typically hostile environments in RF terms and they need careful review and planning to ensure even and full Wi-Fi signal coverage. There often have high ceilings as was the case with this site, reflective metal racking, and the RF signal is constantly changing with racks filling and emptying, forklifts moving within the area, and large paper pallets in stock blocking signal.

2) 4 x A3c Indoor Access Points configured to AltaiCare were also installed into their administration office situated in Collingwood Administration office. The Collingwood offices have over 25 devices connecting to the Altai network which includes all their BYO devices.

The A3c Access Point install enables staff to move between the warehouse and the admin office seamlessly using the one sign-on. Both these sites communicate with the cloud based warehousing and administration software. From the Admin office they run their CRM system for order entry with the packing slips printed out at the warehouse.

The Altai A3c Access Point is designed to provide the highest speed 2.4 and 5 GHz dual-band dual-concurrent access coverage for indoor areas.

The A3c has both a 2.4 GHz (3×3:3 802.11b/g/n) radio and a high capacity 5 GHz (3×3:3 802.11a/n/ac) radio which can be operated at the same time for 2.4 and 5 GHz dual-band dual-concurrent access coverage. The business is based 20km outside of Ceduna in South Australia on the shores of Murat Bay on the West Coast of Eyre Peninsula. It lies west of the junction of the Flinders and Eyre Highways around 786 km northwest of the capital Adelaide. It boasts a population of 2,300.

While working out of a beautiful location, access to a reliable and speedy data is not so idyllic. The offices were too far out for an ADSL connection, and 4G mobile speeds (for data) were not up to scratch. Noel was on the search for a reliable, high speed wireless data link.

“The Satellite Sky Muster service had constant daily drop outs anywhere from 5 minutes to 5 days.”

Data speeds on a Sky Muster 25/5Mbps plan varied between 1.5/.5Mbps and 17/2.5Mbps with an average of 9/1.5Mbps and an average ping time of 680 ms…. when it was up and working. This meant skype calls and any video conferencing was constantly buffering and any large files took forever to upload…. when it was up and working.

Sky Muster was also limiting on its data plans with half of a 125gb data allowance being night data and only being available when the office was closed so as a result was never used.

After further research Noel discovered that an NBN connection was available on his property but that the Chinta Air offices were located a frustrating 14.3 km from the NBN tower – 300 metres over the NBN 14km cut off line to supply this service.

This meant that a non-standard NBN install had the potential to be a solution. And it had to be solar powered as there was no access to power in the area.

Chinta Air contacted Mal Fricker Communications, a data communications expert operating in the Ceduna area to put together a solar powered wireless link to get a decent speed of data to the office.

Solar Powered Wireless LinksAfter undertaking the correct non-standard NBN install paperwork requirements, a Solar Powered wireless bridge was erected at the edge of the property 13.6km from the NBN tower.

On the bridge mast along with the equipment to solar power the bridge, 1 x Altai C1an in bridge mode beamed the signal 2km to the Chinta Air Offices where another Altai C1an received the signal and disbursed it.

Mal Fricker Communication set up with system over a couple of days and it was up and running immediately on completion.

In October 2014, new features were released that build on Passpoint’s foundation of security and seamless connection to make the technology even more valuable for service providers, while opening up new opportunities for other sectors. New features include:

  • Online sign-up and immediate account provisioning: Passpoint now enables a streamlined process to establish a new user account at the point of access. For service providers, this reduces barriers to account creation and usage. For users, this capability takes the complexity out of getting connected and enables in-pocket connection across a service provider’s network of hotspots.
  • Secure registration: The process of establishing a new account or connecting a second device takes place securely. Devices are provisioned with the appropriate credentials and configuration for network access. Users can be confident they are connecting to their chosen provider’s valid network, and their credentials are exchanged securely.
  • Operator policy: Passpoint now includes the capability for service providers to distribute their specific subscriber policies, such as which networks to join and in what order of preference. This policy support enables providers to deliver the best user experience on Wi-Fi, while still easily maintaining the business requirements of Wi-Fi roaming agreements.

The end-user market is poised to embrace seamless Wi-Fi offerings. Research recently conducted among smartphone and tablet users in the United States and United Kingdom on behalf of Wi-Fi Alliance found that Wi-Fi services enabled by Passpoint have the potential to foster customer loyalty and drive measurable business value for both service providers and retailers.

With internet penetration relatively low in Central America, it was big news when PEPSI, the soft drinks giant launched their new marketing campaign “PEPSI HOY” – a large scale project offering complimentary use of Wi-Fi in major parks across Latin America for tourists and local residents.

The Solution

Altai A3-E and C2s are deployed on the rooftops for Wi-Fi access.

C1n’s are used as CPE’s to extend Wi-Fi coverage while C1an’s are used for wireless bridging.
