One A8 Super WiFi Base Station is enough to provide 360-degree coverage to the dormitories within a 1 km range.

The Papua New Guinea liquefied natural gas (PNG LNG) project is a new gas project championed by ExxonMobil to realise the potential of three large gas discoveries in the southern and western highlands of the country.

Many engineers and workers live on site and require high performance Internet access for web surfing and communication after work. The Chiyoda-JGC (CJJV) joint venture needed a rapid solution for its wireless network and they chose Altai Technologies products to access the high speed WiFi network.

Owing to the geographical environment of the site, only satellite can be used as backhaul.

The Challenge

The site is located just north of Port Moresby, the backhaul is provided by a satellite link. CJJV required long range wireless technologies so as to minimise the number of installation sites for cost saving. Provide signal coverage over the entire large, high density dormitory area. Support high user capacity to cope with heavy usage, particularly after working hours.

The Solution

The A8 base station was installed at the central argas field wifiea of the dormitory site to provide 360-degree coverage. The Altai C1’s were installed in different buildings to extend the outdoor WiFi signal and to provide indoor coverage.  The backhaul was provided by a satellite link.

This supplied a complete end-to-end solution including service control, billing and pre-paid card systems.

The Result

The Altai A8 achieved a line-of-sight range of over 1km to provide high speed wireless connectivity throughout the dormitories. The wireless Internet service is subscribed on a pre-paid basis. People staying at the site may obtain a network access PIN by buying a pre-paid card. There are over 800 users accessing the network daily.

Hong Kong Container Port Wi-Fi Case Study

Hong Kong Modern Terminals is one of the busiest container ports in the world. Modern Terminals currently operates 7.5 berths with total handling capacity of 7 million TEUs. (Container ship capacity is measured in twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU).)

The traditional mesh AP network was not ideal for daily logistic operation due to the complexity and high interference signal at the berths as well as the constraints of site facilities. The WiFi signal was usually blocked by mobile cranes and containers.

The adoption of Altai wireless solution was divided into two phases. In this case we follow phase one installation which included 5 x Altai A8 WiFi base stations installed in berths no. 1, 2, 5 and 9 to cover the whole container terminal with wireless broadband network.

Long range technology was imperative here as there are limited sites for equipment installation.

The Challenge

  • Providing stable port Wi-Fi signal.
  • Multiple base station coverage to every client.
  • Only limited sites were available for installation.
  • Require high data transmission throughput and low latency.
  • Need to support triple play WiFi including video streaming for other interactive applications.

The SolutionAltai Port Wi-Fi

  • 5 x Altai A8 base stations were mounted on the 30 m high light towers to provide total coverage to berth no. 1, 2, 5, 9.
  • 20 x A8 installed for full multiple coverage (7 BTS/km2 vs. original 60 AP/km2)
  • Altai Network Management System (AWMS) is used for monitoring the network performance.

The Result

Providing 7X increase in area coverage than the traditional mesh AP. One A8 base station covers more than 600 m over cranes and 300 m NLOS over container stacks. Each base station provides 3X in data transmission throughput that is 20 Mbps access throughput to users without the need of hopping.

Altai wireless broadband solution provides backhaul protection and interference mitigation, reducing the number of mounting locations, which helps to minimise the entire cost of deployment and maintenance.

AWMS not only provided performance and fault monitoring on the network, but also statistical information on mobile client management.

Over six months’ testing on stability and performance, the results proved that the Altai A8 WiFi system not only meets all the specifications but also exceeds our expectation. The same test was conducted for another AP at the same time, and all the test results of Altai outperform that of traditional AP.

Point to Point Farm WiFi Solution

Coolibah Herbs started in the early 1980’s in Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Australia. It began life selling vegetables and herbs from a 45 acre farm directly to the local markets.

From this humble start, Coolibah Herbs has grown in size to over 2000 acres, supplying major markets and restaurants of Melbourne and Sydney, plus extending their customer base overseas.

Business Needs

To support the growth of the business, Coolibah needed to improve business communication and extend Wi-Fi from one end of the property to the other – roughly a distance of 5-6km. To do this multiple bridges were utilised. The only internet service on the property was from an EoC Symmetrical 7mb Internet Service at the main Administration Block. A number of point to point data links were the perfect solution.

Farm WiFi Solution

To provide maximum Wi-Fi coverage, Altai SuperWifi products including 2 x C1an in bridge mode, one in the main Administration Block and the other in the Farm House/Nursery at the bottom of the property, were utilised. A further 2 x C1an’s were used to skip the signal another 50m across to the farm house.

For Wi-Fi coverage in both areas 5 X C1n’s were used as 2.4Ghz access points. The coverage is complete and there is no speed loss, up or down, at the remote site.

Bridge 1 & 2:

The aim of this bridge was to extend this signal to the Farm House and Nursery Block, to the North of the Administration block to poll Time clocks and stream Security camera footage as well as to provide network access to staff.

Bridge 3:

Network access was also required in the Agronomy department to the south, situated in another house approximately 150m from the Admin block. Underground cable was not possible so a 5Ghz bridge was set up using 2 x C1an’s. For Wi-Fi access a C1n was used. Again there is no loss of speed at the remote end.

Farm Wifi

Bridge 4:

The mechanics who work on the farm machinery utilise diagnostic tools requiring network access. Once again 2 x C1an’s were used to provide the bridge, and 2 x C1n’s were used to provide Wi-Fi access in what is a large and cluttered area. No loss experienced here either.

Bridge 5:

A second farm approximately 3.2 km east in direct line of sight had no internet access. In order to allow admin to Poll Time clocks, provide network access and stream live security footage, another 2 X C1an’s were used to provide the bridge and a further 2 X C1n’s were used to provide Wi-Fi access. Some upload speed loss is experienced at this remote end however download speed is unaffected.

At all locations, the C1n’s were installed to extend Wi-Fi coverage to the areas around the buildings. To supply mobile data a Robustel R3000 4L LTE Wi-Fi modem was utilised.

The bridges are very stable and show no loss over the shorter distances. There is some loss over the 3.2km bridge however due to the environmental factors (tin sheds, trees etc in the way) this is still the best possible outcome and is very usable by a happy client.
